Under Counter Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Systems with Ultraviolet Sterilization

Our 6-Stage, Under-counter Reverse Osmosis filter with Ultraviolet sterilizer is our most popular system to remove contaminents in your water supply. Far cheaper than whole house water purification solutions, this filter system is usually installed under the kitchen and/or bathroom sinks to provide a local supply of purified water through a dedicated, purified water tap, mounted into your counter top or sink back splash. - $495.00, installed.

Reverse osmosis, also known as "Ultra filtration," or "RO," is the most advanced water filtration method available, and is the preferred treatment technology used by bottled-water companies and desalinization plants. Of all technologies used to purify drinking water, RO has the greatest range of contaminant removal. The pores in a reverse osmosis membrane are only approximately 1/10,000th of a micron in size (bacteria are 0.2 to 1 micron, and viruses are 0.02 to 0.4 microns).

Our 6-Stage Reverse Osmosis System:

How It Works

Reverse osmosis uses a Thin Film Composite (TFC) membrane that allows pure water to pass through it while filtering out contaminants that are too large to pass through the tiny pores in the membrane. Quality reverse osmosis systems use a process known as crossflow to allow the membrane to continually clean itself. As some of the fluid passes through the membrane the rest continues downstream, washing the rejected contaminants down the drain. The process of reverse osmosis requires pressure to force the water through the membrane, typically 40 PSI or greater.

Six-stage Treatment:

  1. Stage One - 5 Micron Sediment Pre Filter - Removes sand, sediment and larger organic and particulate matter.

  2. Stage Two - Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Pre-treatment Filter - Removal of organic contaminants, such as chlorine (99.9%), chemicals linked to cancer (THMs, benzine), SOCs (soluble organic compounds) like pesticides and dioxins, herbicides, insecticides, PCB's, MTBE's, and hundreds of other chemical contaminants that may present in water and cause bad taste and odor in your drinking water.

  3. Stage Three - Extruded Carbon Block Filter - Removes tastes, odors, chlorine, & organic impurities, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) like chloroform and petrochemicals, pesticides, and industrial solvents, and provides RO membrane protection.

  4. Stage Four - High Quality TFC Reverse Osmosis Membrane Filter - For reduction of dissolved solids, including the range of toxic heavy metals, lead, sodium, cyanide, ammonium, mercury, bromide, cadmium, trivalent chromium, radium, magnezium, fluoride, nitrates, nitrites and many other contaminants, and parasites such as cryptosporidium and giardia lamblia are trapped then flushed to the sewer.

  5. Stage Five - Ultraviolet Sterilization Chamber - Kills any remaining bacteria and viruses by destroying the nucleic acids in these organisms so that their DNA is disrupted by the UV radiation. This removes their reproductive capabilities and kills them.

  6. Stage Six - Inline Granular Activated Carbon Polishing Filter - Finalizes the cleaning by aerating the water for taste and palatability which assures that you water is as refreshing as it is clear.

What Contaminants Does Reverse Osmosis Remove?

Reverse osmosis (RO) units will remove substantial amounts of most inorganic chemicals (such as salts, metals, minerals) most micro organisms and cysts (including giardia, cryptosporidium, entamoeba, and toxoplasma), and most (but not all) inorganic contaminants.

Reverse osmosis removes dissolved minerals and metals such as:

Aluminum

Barium

Calcium

Copper

Iron

Magnesium

Nitrates

Sodium

Sulphides

Arsenic

Bicarbonates

Chlorides

Cyanide

Lead

Mercury

Phosphates

Silver

Silicates

Ammonium

Cadmium

Chromium

Fluorides

Manganese

Nickel

Selenium

Sulfates

Zinc

RO is also effective in removing asbestos, many taste, color and odor-producing chemicals, particulate matter, total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity, and heavy metals such as radium.

Arsenic

Bacteria
and
Viruses

Bad Tastes
& Odors

Chlorine

Fluoride

Hydrogen
Sulfide

Heavy
Metals

Nitrates

Radon

Sediment

Iron

VOC's

= Effectively Removed         = Significantly Reduced         = Minimal or No Removal

When used with appropriate sediment and activated carbon pre-filtering, additional treatment can also remove "volatile" contaminants (VOCs) as benzene, MTBE, trichloroethylene, trihalomethanes, and radon. Essentially, reverse osmosis is capable of removing bacteria, salts, sugars, proteins, particles, dyes, heavy metals, chlorine and related by-products, and other contaminants.

Depending on your requirements, we also offer the following installation options for your under-counter RO/UV system:

Installation assumes normal conditions and driving time in and around Todos Santos and Perscadero. Some installations may be higher. Work to install in granite, stone or tile counter tops may be higher.

Frequently Asked Questions About Reverse Osmosis Systems

  1. What is Reverse Osmosis? - Reverse osmosis is the finest water filtration method available today. It is the most common treatment technology used by premium bottled water companies and commercial desalinazation plants.

  2. How does Reverse Osmosis work? - Reverse osmosis uses a semi-porous membrane that allows pure water to pass through it while rejecting contaminants that are too large to pass through the tiny pores of the membrane.

  3. Can Reverse Osmosis be used on well water or water from other untreated sources such as lakes or rivers? - Reverse Osmosis is an excellent choice for home owners with well water. However, reverse osmosis does not provide complete protection against all micro organisms. If microbiological contamination is present or suspected, reverse osmosis should be combined with an ultraviolet sterilizer system for maximum protection against bacteria and viruses. A water softener or whole-house iron filter may also be recommended (depending one the level of contamination) to prevent membrane fouling thereby ensuring maximum membrane life and effectiveness.

  4. How often does the reverse osmosis membrane need to be replaced? - With proper maintenance of your sediment and activated carbon pre-filters, your reverse osmosis membrane can last 2 to 5 years. Regular testing of the level of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels before and after the RO filter can determine if your reverse osmosis filter needs replacing.

  5. Why are reverse osmosis systems always combined with carbon and sediment pre-filters? - The only major category of contaminants that reverse osmosis is not highly effective in removing (organic compounds) is specifically targeted by activated carbon filters. Pre-filters also prevent the reverse osmosis membrane from being fouled or clogged by sediment, chlorine, and other contaminants, thereby enhancing its effectiveness and lifespan.

  6. Reverse osmosis systems remove just about everything, including some minerals that are good for the body. Should I take a supplement to restore the minerals I no longer get from treated water? - No, this is not necessary. You should already be getting plenty of nutrients such as essential salts, vitamins, and other trace minerals from the food you eat and other beverages you drink.

  7. How much filtered water does your reverse osmosis system produce? - Our RO systems produce up to 100 gallons of purified water per day. The actual amount of water produced in your home will depend on your household water pressure. Because reverse osmosis water purification occurs slowly (it is a very fine filter!), a storage tank is used to hold 3 to 4 gallons of purified water at all times so pure water is always at your finger tips.

  8. I've heard about other types of water treatment such as "Ionized" water, "Alkalized" water, or "Magnetized" water. Is reverse osmosis the same thing? - Absolutely not. So called "Ionized water" or "Super-ionized water" or "Alkalized water" machines have been soundly debunked for the quackery that they are. Pure water by definition can never be alkaline or acidic, nor can it be made so by electrolysis. Alkaline water must contain metallic ions of some kind - most commonly, sodium, calcium or magnesium. These machines are designed to extract money from your wallet, and do not extract impurities from your water.

Don't be fooled by pseudo-scientific claims for magically treated "Ionized" water, "Alkalized" water, or "Magnetized" water, and its supposed health miracles. Reverse Osmosis is tried and tested technology backed by real-world chemistry and physics. Take the time to research this subject yourself. We have.
